Jess took a sip from her wine glass and then lay back on the bed, curling up into Marshall as he wrapped his thick arms around her. She was cocooned in his safe world where there were no spirits, no demons, no scary creatures waiting to drag her or her daughter away. As long as Marshall was there, she was safe. She ran her fingers over his chest and then down to his naked thighs. He sighed contently into her hair.

‘I think you should move in,’ she said.

He held his breath. She waited for his chest to rise again and when it did, he answered her.

‘You sure?’

She nodded, feeling the warmth of his skin brush against her cheek.

‘Yes. Very sure. You’re a part of this family and I want to make it official.’ She held him tighter. Don’t leave me, she thought.

He hugged her in response and kissed her head before releasing her and shuffling his position so he could look at her.

‘You’re not just saying this because of what happened tonight?’

Jess wondered how truthful to be.

‘Maybe a little, but I’ve been thinking about it before. I do want to live with you. You’re right, this living apart is silly. I was just scared. But tonight scared me more. The idea of not having you and Ruby with me scares me more. And I don’t want to waste any more time.’

Marshall grinned and kissed her lips hard, his hands slipping down her body, over her hips and pulling her closer.

‘There’s another conversation there,’ he murmured. ‘About tonight. About what happened. And whether you should be doing this, but—’ he added quickly as Jess drew breath, ‘—not tonight. Let’s argue about that tomorrow. Yeah?’

Jess softened and shrugged. It was a conversation that had to happen. At least if it happened tomorrow, she would have time to think about how she felt and they could have some fun right now.

‘Okay.’ She kissed him, moving so that she sat on top, straddling him.

‘If we’re talking about making this more official, maybe we should get married,’ said Marshall, cupping her breasts.

Jess stopped and slowly eased his hands away.

‘Excuse me?’

Marshall faltered, searching her eyes for her true feelings. She wondered what he saw. Her stomach had flipped pleasurably at the words so she smiled at him and he relaxed, placing his hands back on her chest.

‘It was just an idea,’ he said.

Jess lowered herself to kiss his lips, imagining him as her husband, imagining herself as a wife. She smiled as their lips pressed together, her heart pounding.

‘It’s a good idea,’ she murmured into the kiss.

With a moan, Marshall flipped her over so that he was on top and that’s when there came a knock at the front door. Bubbles sprang to life downstairs, barking hysterically, and Marshall gave a soft growl, looking at Jess.

‘Should we ignore it?’

‘It’s three in the morning. I don’t think we can ignore it,’ Jess whispered, scared whoever was at the door might hear her. Who knocked on the door
